How AI Thinks.

An insight into artificial intelligence.

I wanted to be a robotics engineer when I was five years old.

I've always been fascinated by artificial intelligence and eager to learn more about this emerging tool so that I could best contribute to software developments coming out in the markets.

I recently read the book "How AI Thinks" by Nigel Toon. The book does a great job explaining how we feed data into AI models. How are these models built, how does Chat GPT work?
It was interesting to take as step back and review how we as humans interpret information, so that we can then put this into a process (we use deduction AND Induction) that can then be put into a software model. We separate fact from inferred contextual knowledge, and seems to be that the contextual knowledge is the part these new intelligent models have a harder time with.

I found it fascinating that while the human brain has about 100 trillion synaptic connections, ChatGPT only has around 1.7 trillion. It seems small in comparison (like 1 /100), and it blows my mind because I already find AI innovation to provide such a useful tool. Knowing that it has only a fraction of the connectivity of our brains shows me how much more room there is for technology to grow. It also makes me realize that many of us are probably not tapping into the full capability of our own brains!

It also reminds us that, like humans, artificial intelligence provides probable, not certain, answers. They are not written law, but similar to a meteorology weather forecast, they have strong probabilities in accuracy.

For those who are fearful of AI, I think this analogy is helpful::

Steve Jobs once explained that while the condor uses the least energy to move a kilometer, a human on a bicycle is twice as efficient. His point was that humans are toolmakers who can create technology that amplifies their abilities . He said that computers, for him, were the " bicycle for our minds ." If we think of AI as a tool to enhance and amplify human intelligence, it may ease some of the fears about the unknown.

The scariest thing right now (to me) is the lack of parameters, global parameters - for what can/not be built. We desperately need to not only share an understanding of AI, but find a way to better regulate AI.

My biggest fear is the plausible weaponization of autonomous systems without proper legislation and global parameters. Surely they're on their way, I am confident legislation will exist; I just hope it's in time before some menace to society, builds a destruction machine.

Another fear is that AI will somehow become sentient and conscious, but I think it's important to remember that humans create and program the software. It's not the machine that thinks—it's the humans who tells it what to do. AI uses data the way we program it to; the idea that we'll wake up to sentient machines just isn't something we’ll see.

I really liked the book's definition of intelligence:
"the ability to gather and use information to adapt and survive."

The author argues this may be our overarching biological purpose. It's fascinating to see how this idea translates mechanically and artificially.

It's crazy to think that the World Wide Web only came about in 1993. I was a young child then, and it’s incredible how quickly technology has advanced. Amazon sold its first book in 1995, and now ChatGPT launched in 2023.

One of the more interesting insights from the book is about the future . While Silicon Valley and semiconductors have driven technological advancement for decades, the author suggests that silicon computers won't be able to scale the way they have over the past 60 yea rs. Quantum mechanics (althoug h not a topic I know much about) will likely lead to quantum machines working alongside silicon computers, giving us unprecedented speed and computation power.

There are also health companies working on molecular computers that mimic biological systems. I have no doubt AI will transform healthcare and diagnosis. Maybe we'll finally see a cure for cancer....

Education will also be transformed. Bill Gates recently said that AI in education will "know your interests and learning style, tailoring content to keep you engaged." I love the idea of teachers focusing on coaching and creativity, rather than the mundane administrative tasks that currently dominate their time.

Of course, AI presents many challenges, and we need far more protections in place . Right now, we’re seeing an influx of deepfakes and AI tools designed to manipulate human emotions. With elections approaching, I’m surprised we haven’t seen more of this, but we all know about phone scams or manipulated faces created through generative AI. This will only become more common, but it’s not the tool we need to fear—we control it.

We must embrace AI while also finding ways to legislate it to keep us safe. Just like doctors follow the Hippocratic oath, maybe AI developers need a similar code of ethics to keep the technology responsible.

Why introversion and extroversion matter in design.

How can we celebrate introverts and extroverts alike in multifamily interior commercial spaces?

We recently delved into Susan Cain’s book “Quiet,” which has provided us with invaluable insights into designing multifamily properties that accommodate the diverse personalities of both introverts and extroverts.

Her insights on the contrasting needs of extroversion and introversion were insightful, and helpful in repositioning how we define multifamily living as spaces where both connection and quiet thrive.

One example of how we can apply Cain's wisdom is by creating intimate lounges and communal areas that offer moments of solitude and thoughtful acoustics to minimize noise disruptions amidst the bustle of public / work space.

Additionally, Cain's insights prompt us to reevaluate the concept of the "open office," which has become increasingly popular but may not be conducive to the needs of all personality types. By reconsidering our approach to workplace design and incorporating elements that cater to both introverted and extroverted tendencies, we can create environments that foster productivity and well-being for all employees.

Ultimately, Cain’s book challenges us to cultivate environments that celebrate the full spectrum of personality traits, to foster environments that celebrate introversion and extroversion alike; ultimately ensuring that every resident feels seen and valued.

The design process is an incredible thing.

Some companies live or die by their standards and processes, others nod to them, and few (successful) companies have little to none (shriek!)

The beauty of good process comes about through thoughtful approach.

Inspired by a recent article in Departures magazine , we would agree with writer Erin eh Dixon in conversation with Italian Brunello Cucinelli in that “there is a moment to think and a moment to do, these phases need to be distinct. Otherwise, there is confusion”

The article aligns with the sentiments expressed by author Erin eh Dixon in her conversation with Italian Brunello Cucinelli, emphasizing the distinction between moments of thinking and doing in order to avoid confusion. Overall, it encourages readers to embrace moments of leisure and reflection in their creative processes to ultimately create better environments.

The article emphasizes the importance of embracing process in interior design, likening it to a journey or a story unfolding. It highlights the value of thoughtful approach and the integration of creative thought into the design process.

Drawing inspiration from the Italian concept of "ozia" or leisure, it suggests that moments of reflection and planning are crucial for success. Many Westerners may cringe at the Italian “ozia” (“ozia” is from the word oziare - the Italian verb “to laze about”) - but at TDC we tend to embrace this state- for “when it’s Creative, these hours aren’t lost.”

These illusions are unmeasurable and yet Simultaneous Contrast directly affects our perceptions of how lightness really is.

In the realm of interior design, understanding the phenomenon of simultaneous contrast can significantly impact how spaces are perceived and experienced.

As Josef Albers famously stated,
"How red is red? That depends in part on its context."

This simple statement encapsulates the essence of simultaneous contrast, where colors are perceived in relation to one another within our field of vision.

2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design

Accessibility and inclusivity in interior design is imperative.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has been a cornerstone in ensuring that spaces are not just aesthetically pleasing but also functionally accessible to all individuals, regardless of their physical abilities.

The concept of universal design, as advocated by the ADA, emphasizes creating environments that are usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.

This goes beyond mere compliance with regulations; it's about fostering environments that are welcoming and functional for everyone. Universal design principles recognize that the needs of individuals vary widely and that an inclusive approach to design benefits society as a whole.

One of the key areas where the principles of the ADA come into play is in countertop heights. We usually keep our countertops 29-34" AFF max but often times we create varying height solutions where it allows us to have bar height and ADA height in one solution. This not only enhances accessibility for individuals with disabilities but also promotes inclusivity by ensuring that everyone, regardless of their physical stature or mobility, can comfortably utilize the space.

You've likely run into the Janka Scale, the ICC, the AWC – or a combination of these resources!

Understanding the hardness of wood species is crucial in interior design specifications due to its direct impact on both applicability and fire rating.

The Janka hardness scale , which measures a wood's resistance to indentation, helps designers select suitable materials for various applications.

Harder woods, such as oak or maple, are often preferred for high-traffic areas like flooring, while softer woods, such as pine or cedar, may be more appropriate for decorative elements.

The 'Relative Hardness' chart below are a good example to showcase the offering on popular interior hardwoods. The Janka ratings of different wood species helps you choose flooring that balances style, functionality, and durability.

That's where faux plants come into play.

Although real is best, faux plants offer a cost-effective alternative to live plants, eliminating the need for ongoing maintenance while still providing the desired aesthetic. In multifamily settings, where operation costs can be high this is a cost-effective alternative.

Here are *our top 5 favorite interior plants* offering variety and visual appeal, to help inspire you on your next multi family interior.

Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree (Ficus lyrata):
Fiddle leaf figs have been widely popular due to their large, lush leaves, which add a touch of elegance and sophistication to commercial spaces. A special trick we like to incorporate on our multi family interiors is incorporating real mulch, or bark, into the pot themselves. It gives the illusion of a real plant!

Succulents and Cacti:
Artificial succulents and cacti are often chosen for their modern aesthetic. These plants add a contemporary touch to commercial interiors, and the artificial counterparts offer aesthetics without the finicky watering needs.

Snake Plant (Sansevieria Trifasciata):
Snake plants are known for their adaptability and air-purifying qualities. Artificial snake plants are commonly used to introduce a sense of greenery without the need for extensive care. We particularly like the ones that have thick wax look to them. There are some excellent options that even feel real.

Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia Reginae):
The large and striking leaves of the artificial Bird of Paradise plant are favored, providing a tropical and exotic feel to interiors. We particularly like the height we are able to achieve with this and the width span that these often are able to achieve.

Pothos (Epipremnum Aureum):
Pothos plants, with their trailing vines and heart-shaped leaves, are often chosen for their versatility and ability to thrive in various lighting conditions. Although we like this one, Ivy and other trailing options are often a great way to connect space vertically.
